Why Have a Doula?
A Doula is a trained professional who understands birth and the emotional needs of a laboring mother. Adding a Doula to your birth team prenatally can be very beneficial because you have someone who is a constant during your second to third trimester. Doulas will advocate for you and empower you to help you achieve your birth goals. A Doula can teach you how labor works and provide you with information for the many questions that arise in every pregnancy. The value of having a Doula on your birth team is helpful in many ways because we Doulas can help you during labor by suggesting different positions that better manage pain and teach you breathing techniques that not only help with pain but also keep your body relaxed. We hold your space and support your decisions, as well as help you achieve the birth you desire and deserve. A Doula will help guide and coach the laboring mother, as well as the partner, in when to use specific positions to provide optimal space for the baby to descend into the birth canal. Not only does a Doula help the mother, but in the case of a potentially long labor, it gives the primary support person a chance to take a break, grab a bite to eat, and rest. The Doula does not replace or interfere with you and your partner but simply guides you both with reassurance and advice during labor and birth. As a Doula, I recognize that birth is a key life experience that will never be forgotten. It is my desire to nurture and protect your memory of your birth experience.

A Doula is not a medical professional. We do not perform cervical checks, check fetal heart tones, blood pressure, or give medical advice. We also do not speak to the medical staff on your behalf. However, we do provide resources to help you make informed decisions and facilitate conversations between you and the care provider, creating a level of respect and trust in the patient-care provider relationship.
